Health Regulation in Israel. Pharmaceuticals, Tobacco, and Obesity

Sunday February 17th, 2013

Ramada Hotel
Jerusalem, Israel

The public health community in much of the world has been taken over by big government, anti-industry and anti-free market forces. Public health activity, and the huge resources that go with it is really no longer about public health, but political ideology.

Israel in particular is at a crossroads. Is it going to go the way of Europe's precautionary principle? Or will Israel let science guide policies?

honor of Milton Friedman 100th birthday the Jerusalem Institute for Market Studies (JIMS), Atlas Network and the Acton Institute are cosponsored a four day conference in May 2012. The conference "Religion and Economic Liberty: A Match Made in Heaven?" took place in Jerusalem at the David Citadel Hotel.

The conference addressed the question of why so many Jews and Christians are discomfited by Capitalism and the idea of organizing an economy along free market lines. It is all too often assumed that Judaism and Christianity align with socialism and that religious ethics imply government intervention and forced redistribution.

However, this conference explored the mutually beneficial relationship between religion and economic liberty. We explored why religion flourishes in capitalist societies and why religious citizens enable a vibrant civil society, thus precluding the need for government intervention.
